A 12-year-old boy reeled in a 551-pound bull shark Tuesday, north of the Palm Beach inlet in Florida. The catch managed to break the state record for the heaviest bull shark caught.

After spending half a day out in the water, Aidan Murray Medley, a seventh-grader at Eagle Hill School who was vacationing with his family, found himself wrestling with the fish for 20 minutes, reportedly losing feeling from his body.

"When you have a shark on the line it's completely painful," noted Medley.

The Palm Beach Post reported that Medley, who had been fishing since he was 5, went out to the ocean hoping to catch anything at all, but ended reeling in the shark all on his own.

Medley's mother says this isn't the first time her son managed to catch a shark; Aidan reeled one in a year ago that weighed 461 pounds. "If course, I'm happy. I'm proud," she said. "It's not really surprising to me. I'm still pretty happy."

The AP reported that the family is planning to submit the measurements of the shark to officially register for the state record, which currently stands at 517 pounds. The record was set in 1981.
