A 12-year-old girl faces attempted murder and aggravated battery charges after trying to run a police officer over with a car.

According to local authorities, a Polk County Sheriff's deputy fired several shots at a 12-year-old girl who attempted to run him over with a car.

The Associtated Press reports the girl was driving a Chevrolet Cavalier with her 6-year-old brother inside. Two deputies pursued her after she sped away from an intersection in Lakeland, east of Tampa.

The deputies blocked the vehicle, a Cavalier, between their cars. That's when the sheriff's office said the girl drove toward Deputy Chris Hillsgrove, who was standing next to his vehicle.

A sheriff's office spokeswoman said Hillsgrove feared for his life and fired at the Cavalier before jumping out of the way.

Official reports state at least three shots passed over the girl's head. The deputy is on administrative leave and the girl faces several charges, including attempted murder and aggravated battery.
