Samaira Nazir wanted to marry her Afghan boyfriend, though she knew that her parents would disapprove. She also did not want to an arranged marriage from her family circle. She was prepared to fight to keep her boyfriend.

However, the family also went to extreme lengths to dissolve the relationship.

Nazir's brother was jailed for a minimum of 20 years for her murder. The victim's cousin, who is 17, will serve 10 years for his role in her death in April 2006.

The "honor killing," occurred at her home in front of her parents. It was executed with four knives, pinning down Samaira, and leaving her with three cuts to her throat and 18 stab wounds.

Jurors were informed that the family disapproved of Samaira's boyfriend, Salman Mohammed, due to his caste.

The court was also told that Ms. Nazir had a heated argument with her family members. The men attacked her, and kept her from escaping.

A neighbor, who came to the house and banged on the door, heard her screaming. However, Samaira's father told the neighbor that his daughter was having a fit.

Ms. Nazir was heard shouting at her mother, "You are not my mother any more," reports the Guardian.

Her family held her down, tied a silk scarf around her neck and Imran Mohammed slashed her neck three times.
