A recent study reveals 24 percent of American adults between 18 and 50 - nearly one and four - have at least one tattoo and about 36 percent of Americans between 18 to 29 are tattooed.
The study shows body piercings are also popular. About one in seven said they are pierced somewhere other than their earlobe and one in three of 18 to 29 year olds are pierced, the AP reports
Co-author of the study Dr. Anne Laumann, a Northwestern University dermatologist, says that given the large number of young adults who have body art, the findings of the study indicate that the percentage of people with tattoos and piercings will continue to grow.
"They haven't had time to get their body piercing. They haven't had time to get their tattoo. They are just beginning to get into it and the number is really big," she says.
The study is scheduled to appear Monday on the Web site of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
