Police and customs agents in Salt Lake County, Utah on Thursday announced they confiscated 431 pounds of an African drug called khat.
According to the Salt Lake Tribune, authorities said they arrested two men connected to the contraband, which consisted of leaves packed in plastic bags. The two men will face federal smuggling charges.
The khat came from Ethiopia and was consigned to a resident of Holladay.
John Glaittli, the port director for customs in Salt Lake City, said a customs agent got suspicious of the shipment tagged as 100 kilograms of spices for personal use. That led to the discovery of the khat.
Authorities believe the khat is for distribution to African immigrants in Salt Lake City. The leaf, when chewed, induce manic behaviors, hyperactivity, and hallucinations.
