A US man with the number plate 'XXXXXXX' has received £12,000 worth of parking fines.

Scottie Roberson - whose customised plate is a mix of his nickname 'Racer X' and his lucky number seven - has been sent fines for every unidentified, fined car in his city.

Traffic wardens in Birmingham, Alabama enter seven letter Xs onto their forms when cars with tickets don't have valid number plates.

Roberson claims he had told local authorities, but the notices continued to arrive.

At one stage he received 10 fines a day.

He said: "Whenever I call, nobody seems to want to help me. One woman said not to worry about it because they didn't have the manpower to come arrest me."

Since he spoke out about his problem, officials have cancelled the fines and are currently working on a new ticketing system.
