A German robbery suspect burgled a shop on his way to the police station for questioning.

The 41-year-old man took a detour on the way to his local station - where he was due to be interrogated over a suspected robbery - when he stopped to steal from a nearby supermarket.

Police in Lippe said: "It was a case of 'just nipping out to do a bit of thieving before being interrogated for shoplifting'."

Officers discovered the man's plan when supermarket staff telephoned through details of his appearance, and they noticed a man of the same description was sitting in their waiting room.
