A 78-year-old woman is arrested after lacing a can of cat food with rat poison to ensure her neighbor's cats stayed away from her backyard.
Myrtle Maly has been charged with two felony counts of animal mistreatment after admitting to officers to placing D-Con rodent killer in a can of "Special Kitty Salmon Dinner" cat food. The woman set the trap for her neighbor's cats, Tangerine and Tiger, after the two snuck into her backyard and attacked some birds.
Robert Yu woke up one morning to find both of his cats very ill, convulsing, and foaming at the mouth. Upon calling the pets' veterinarian, the doctor informed him the symptoms were consistent with poisoning.
Peering over his neighbor's fence, Yu noticed an open can of cat food. Maly was out of town, so he decided to sneak into the backyard and investigate. He found most of the contents of the can had been eaten. Suspecting his neighbor had been responsible for poisoning his mascots, he informed detectives.
Upon interrogation, Maly admitted to setting the trap with the intention of making them very sick, so they would never return to her backyard again. When asked if she felt remorse about the cats' death, she said, "I have a good feeling because the birds are happy now."
Maly faces three years in jail, if convicted.
