An elderly woman was surprised to find her own obituary in a Bangor, Maine newspaper Sunday. The mistake was the result of a mix-up in the paperwork of a funeral home.

Anne E. Hathaway, 92, said that she was surprised to find her name in the obituaries of the Bangor Daily News. She said that the information stated in the entry was accurate, except for the slight error that she was still in fact very much alive.

Hathaway, who resided in Orono, explained that she had made advanced funeral arrangements with the nursing home. The home, however, had files on her, Anne Hathaway, and a Bangor woman named Ann Hathaway. The wrong file was then sent to the newspaper, which then published the death notice of Anne Hathaway, instead of Anne's, as originally intended.

"I just laughed," the UPI quoted Hathaway. "I went to the pearly gates and opened the door and they didn't have any strawberry shortcake and they didn't like the way my hair looked."

Hathaway learned of the mistake when friends started calling her to make sure she was still alive. The AP reported that she is doing fine, and that she had gotten her hair done this week, making it look much better than it did when the obituary entry was published.
