A 16-year-old high school student was ejected from a Continental Airlines flight because she was coughing. Rachel Collier's mother, who was eagerly awaiting her daughter's return in Hawaii, was infuriated when she got a call from one of the trip supervisors telling her that Rachel was not allowed to travel from New York because she was coughing.
Stephanie Collier, Rachel's mom thought that it was some kind of joke as April Fools Day is round the corner, but was shocked to discover the truth. Rachel, who was returning home to Honolulu after a class trip to Washington, D.C., and New York boarded the nonstop flight to Hawaii with 40 classmates and two teachers.
According to ABC News, Rachel soon began to cough uncontrollably as she suffered from a cold. It prompted members of the flight staff to ask the teen if she was well and she was soon given the option of whether she wanted to stay or not.
She was also examined by a doctor onboard who had given her some NyQuil but the pilot was not convinced and came out to tell her that she would be taken off the flight.
However, Julie King, a Continental Airlines spokeswoman says that Rachel was asked to leave following a complaint by a passenger. She added that the step was a "precautionary measure."
"The captain is the ultimate authority in the plane and can remove passengers for the good of other passengers. In this instance, the captain felt he was acting in the best interests of the passenger and other passengers on the flight," a statement from the airlines added.
Rachel is scheduled to arrive home Wednesday night.
