Connellsville, Pennsylvania police rolled out the nation's first all-electric squad car. The converted 2000 Chevrolet Impala is a prototype built by Coherent Systems International with hopes its government customers will also adopt an electric fleet.

The vehicle, which cost Coherent $75,000 to create, can operate a full eight-hour police shift. Using a 110-volt outlet, the car has a four-hour charge or two-hours with a 240-volt charge.

The converted squad car costs about 35 cents per day to operate, versus $3.50 for a gas-powered equivalent, according to the vehicle's creators. Three buttons replaced the traditional gear shift lever.
