A man believed to have been drunk led police on a chase through Interstate 805, stopping only after he crashed into the office of U.S. Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA).
Chula Vista police began chasing a silver truck driven by an unidentified man at about 1:30 am on Sunday on Route 54, according to reports. An officer had tried to stop the truck for speeding, but the driver headed toward Interstate 805 and exited at Bonita Road. Police were briefly able to stop the truck, which was going in speeds of up to 110 miles per hour, with a spike strip.
The chase ended when the vehicle crashed into the office of Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA) on F Street near Third Avenue. The driver, who was pulled out of his truck by firefighters, was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive his injuries. He will be charged with evading arrest, driving under the influence, and driving on a suspended license.
