Sandi Sabloff had been suffering from chronic kidney failure for 20 years. But thanks to kidney donor, 23-year old Australian Ashwyn Falkingham, a member of the Jesus Christians group, more years will be added to Sabloff's life after a successful transplant at the Paraskevaidion Surgical Transplant Centre in Nicosia, Cyprus.
Sabloff and Falkingham are reported to be recovering well.
The transplant was originally scheduled on April 2007 at the Toronto General Hospital. The hospital received a letter from Falkingham's mother and stepfather alleging that he was brainwashed by the Jesus Christians, a so called "kidney cult".
The complaint reportedly prompted the hospital to cancel the procedure over ethical issues.
Sabloff first met Falkingham through the Internet. After some email exchanges both agreed that Falkingham would travel to Canada for the transplant while Sabloff covered his traveling expenses.
The hospital is said to have questioned whether Falkingham may have been forced into donating by the Jesus Christians, according to news reports last year.
According to the Australian new reports, Falkingham had come to Canada because he could not donate his organ in Australia unless he had a long standing friendship with the donor recipient.
Jesus Christians believe that giving up an organ to save someone's life is an exemplary act of devotion to God and humankind.
