The dismembered body of a woman was found floating in a Sunrise canal on Wednesday by construction workers. The woman apparently had been attacked by an alligator.

Police identified the woman as Yovy Suarez Jimenez, 28, whose family members had reported her as missing and said that she had gone out jogging along a bicycle path on Tuesday evening.

According to Officer Jorge Pino, spokesman for the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, both the physical evidence and the report of a witness point to the theory that she was dragged into the water and was attacked by an alligator.

The unidentified witness reported that a woman matching Jimenez's description was seen sitting by the canal with her feet dangling over the edge of the water. However, no one actually saw an alligator attack.

An autopsy to be performed Thursday will determine whether Jimenez died from the injuries she sustained or whether she possibly drowned, but apparently an alligator got a hold of her somehow.

It is very rare to be killed by an alligator, although there have been other incidents, and the extremely dry conditions in the area are bringing them out more.
