Angry bees forced a Florida middle school to shut down for over three hours after a man operating a bulldozer nearby hit a hive of Africanized honey bees. After being chased by the bees for several hundred yards, the man was stung several times but was not seriously injured.
The Palm Beach Post reported that authorities at the Forest Grove Middle School in Fort Pierce were forced to shut down the school within 10 minutes of the incident. It resulted in rerouting the buses and delaying students' homecoming.
After spraying the hive with foam, firefighters collected the dead bees to determine if they were Africanized bees.
Africanized bees have migrated north into the U.S. from Brazil; they were originally imported from Africa. They are more aggressive than American honeybees that are descended from European bees.
