An anonymous donor felt so sorry for Crusty the alligator that they put up $1,150 to spare his life.
After an undercover three-day sting operation earlier this month by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission it was concluded that Crusty had been fed too much fast food, making him a threat to humans.
Officials were going to capture the animal from the Florida Everglades and euthanize him. But the donation made it possible for Crusty to be sent to an animal exhibit at the Seminole Reservation in Hollywood, Fla. But Crusty still has yet to be caught.
In 2004 more than 7,000 alligators were euthanized after they grew accustomed to being fed by humans.
The FFWCC has been cracking down on humans feeding alligators since a string of alligator attacks in May. Feeding an alligator is considered a misdemeanor crime punishable by fine and 60 days in jail.
