The waif-look could soon be officially out in the land of fashion houses.

On Tuesday, the lower house of parliament adopted a landmark measure making it illegal for anyone -- including fashion magazines and celebrities - to incite or promote unhealthy thinness.

CNN.Com reported that the bill goes to the Senate in coming weeks. Under the bill, offenders can be imprisoned for up to two years and impose fines of up to $47,000.

However, punishment would increase to three years in prison and fines up to $71,000 in cases where a victim dies of an eating disorder.

The anti-anorexia bill is the latest and perhaps strongest among measures proposed after the anorexia-linked death of a Brazilian model in 2006.

Moreover, just last week French lawmakers and fashion industry members signed a non-binding charter to promote healthier body images.
