A battle is brewing over whether a potato should continue to symbolize the state of Idaho.

State Sen. Hal Bunderson wants the "Famous Potatoes" slogan removed because it is no longer the state's biggest moneymaker, reports Reuters.

He says: "Other than as a consumer, the majority of people in Idaho have no connection to 'Famous Potatoes.'"

In the last 46 years, the potato has dropped from the number one agricultural earner to No. 3, behind milk and livestock.

Furthermore, Idaho's major export now is high technology.

Frank Muir, president of the Idaho Potato Commission, is angered by the proposal, saying it ignores the spud's many contributions to the state.

"We don't have to be embarrassed by our agricultural roots. Why not be proud of your potato?"
