Police in Miami arrested a suspect in a series of cat killings and mutilations that have kept pet owners in two south Florida communities on edge since May.

Tyler Weinman, 18, of the town of Cutler Bay, was arrested Sunday morning and charged with 19 counts of animal cruelty, 19 counts of improperly disposing of an animal body and four counts of burglary.

The animal cruelty charges are third-degree felonies. The burglary charges are second-degree felonies and improperly disposing of an animal body is a second-degree misdemeanor.

Maj. Julie Miller of the Miami-Dade County Police Department said since May 13, there had been 19 cats that were killed and mutilated and left in their owners' yards. The killings happened in Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay. Weinman's parents divorced in 2006, and he split his time between his mother and father who lived in both communities.

"These are 19 cat deaths that we now believe to be the work of Tyler J. Weinman," Miller said at a press conference Sunday morning.

Miller said police believed Weinman was their man because of "investigations" and "intelligence." Weinman had two previous arrests as a juvenile.
