The Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Center in Australia recommended the eating of camel meat to help save the continent's habitat. The recommendation was an offshoot of its finding that one million feral camels that roam the continent's desert are destroying its water resources.

Murray McGregor, author of the report, admitted feasting on camel meat, which he said is similar to beef, but because it is lean, it is a healthy food source

Camels were brought to Australia by European settlers in the 19th and 20th centuries, but were subsequently sent to the continent's outback with the spread of railways and roads.

Camel meat has been eaten for centuries. Ancient Greek literature reported camels being roasted whole and served in Persian banquets. The practice of dining on camel meat is prevalent in Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya, Sudan and Kazakhstan.

Another study had a similar recommendation for Australians to gorge on kangaroo meat because of the amount of methane gas the hopping animal emits, which contributes to global warming.
