Officers at Perth Amboy police station have discovered six beheaded birds - three chickens and three pigeons - and a beheaded fish on the beach along Sadowski Parkway near First Street. Authorities said the discovery was made Tuesday morning after someone called to report the unusual killings.
Deputy Chief E.J. McDonald of the Perth Amboy Police said the animals were found together in a bag that might have washed up to the shore with the tide.
"Initially it came in along the lines of maybe it was a shrine or ritualistic set up, but that's not the case," he said, according to AP, adding that the animals were probably beheaded somewhere else.
McDonald said the local chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as well as Perth Amboy police, are investigating the incident.
