A barge that landed in the middle of the Lower Ninth Ward after Hurricane Katrina flooded the city of New Orleans is finally being cut in pieces and removed.

The barge, which became somewhat of a symbol of the destruction that Hurricane Katrina brought to the region, was being cut apart Friday by workers wielding torches. The 200-foot barge sat on a row of houses that were located opposite of the Industrial Canal wall after the storm.

It moved again after Hurricane Rita caused more flooding in the area. Some pieces of the barge will be saved and used later as evidence in pending lawsuits concerning the break of the levees. According to Don Haycraft, lawyer for Ingram Barge, the company that owns the barge, the rest of the pieces will be scrapped.
