In a growing problem in New York City, scores of bedbugs are turning up in hotels, hospitals, movie theaters and more, causing an increased number of calls to exterminators and discomfort for those getting bitten by them.
Experts say the problem is not just limited to New York either. The bloodsucking bugs are spreading to other states and counties at an alarming rate. The Big Apple just happens to be the hotspot of activity currently.
''There's an epidemic going on throughout the country, and New York seems to be the hotbed,'' Jeffrey Eisenberg, a pest control expert, told the Associated Press.
The bugs are prone to attacking in the night, as they try to avoid light, and are the size of an apple seed. They are transported on clothing and can be found in the cleanest apartments and homes.
Those who have bedbugs don't see them and before an exterminator can even begin to fumigate for bedbugs, all linens, clothing, upholstery, toys and more must be washed thoroughly, even dry cleaned in some instances. Homeowners must vacuum several times a day to get rid of the pesky insects and exterminators must visit the home several times before the problem can be eradicated.
