For a brief time, the hallowed 'house that Babe built' was a wedding chapel for a blind radio baseball reporter and his bride. It was the first time a wedding had been celebrated on the ball diamond itself.
In unseasonably warm sunshine, 67-year-old Ed Lucas married his 51-year-old sweetheart, Allison Pheifle, at home plate.
Besides a love of baseball, the two also share the inability to actually watch the game. Lucas was blinded as a child when he was hit between the eyes by a line drive baseball. The bride is legally blind. They were introduced several years ago by Yankees Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto.
As Lucas puts it, "I don't think you have to have sight to find someone to love."
