The mastermind of a stolen body parts operation plead guilty to hundreds of counts of abusing corpses, committing forgery, theft and other allegations in Philadelphia Friday after being sentenced in New York for the same crimes.
Michael Mastromarino, 44, of Fort Lee, N.J., a former oral surgeon was caught trafficking body parts and tissue for transplants and donations with out the consent of the families of the deceased, and with out screening the tissues for disease.
It is estimated that about 10,000 people were recipients of the stolen tissues, which included bones and tendons. The parts were uses for a myriad of surgeries, such as dental implants, knee and hip replacements, and more.
Mastromarino was in business with three Philadelphia funeral directors, who supplied the corpses for harvesting. Upon the discovery of the crimes, WCBSTV reported that investigators found PVC pipes and rags stuffed into bodies where bones should have been.
One of the funeral directors, James McCafferty, plead guilty earlier this month to his participation in the crime, and two more, brothers Gerald and Louis Garzone will begin their trials Tuesday.
Mastrmarino has already been sentenced to 18-54 years in New York State, but faces a life sentence and up to $18 million in fines in Philadelphia.
