A Boston trolley conductor was text messaging his girlfriend when he crashed into the back of another trolley Friday night on the city's Green Line.
Almost 50 people had to be hospitalized as a result of the crash and the city's Central Station had to be shut down. The conductor had 22 months on the job, a Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Boston Globe.
The trolley driven by the 24-year-old conductor hit the other trolley, which was stopped at a red light, and caused it to jolt into a tunnel leading into the city's Park Street Station. Both vehicles derailed and sustained significant damage.
MTBA's chief Dan Grabauskas told reporters he was trying "to contain my outrage" at the conductor's actions. Under MTBA policy, texting while driving a train, trolley or bus is grounds for dismissal.
No one taken to the hospital suffered life-threatening injuries, according to the MTBA.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
