A 15-year-old boy doing a paving job here Friday after accidentally being buried by hot asphalt that suddenly unloaded from a truck. Co-workers failed to dig the boy's body out of the heated asphalt and burned their hands in the process. Firefighters who came to the scene on Quarry Road took 14 minutes to recover the dead boy. "We arrived on scene and there was an individual buried by asphalt. Only his hair was sticking out. Individuals buried in that much fill or asphalt or anything, he is dead. He's deceased. Because your body cannot survive that," Stony Mountain fire Chief Wallace Drysdale told Radio Canada news. Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health and Stonewall RCMP are investigating the accident. Authorities did not release the name of the victim at the request of his family. The boy was employed by the paving company Interlake Asphalt Paving. He was part of a crew paving a parking lot near an old Manitoba Hydro substation on Quarry Road when the accident occurred. |

What kind of moron hires a 15-year-old to be anywhere around hot asphault in the first place? The crew sounded unprepared for emergencies also and he didn't stand a chance. His family deserves our prayers and a HUGE settlement from the company for such idiocy. Young lads like that should be bagging groceries or serving burgers, not being anywhere near such a dangerous substance .I also hope the fire investigators find gross negligence on the part of the company for the incident.

why was a 15 year old allowed to work at that kind of job?

This is why we (U.S. Americans) have child protection laws on employment because no 15 yr old should be working with cement/asphalt on his own or with a work crew. But this is Canada but his parents should know better..How unfortunate.this kid's only job should have been to go to school and become educated so he would not have to ever work on such a job-My heart goes out to his family.

Why on earth was a 15 year old working for a paving company? The company should be held 100% responsible!! Asphalt is 400+ degrees, that child din't have a chance, nobody would. What a horrible tragedy, my heart goes out to the family.
