A Brazilian immigrant was arrested Tuesday for allegedly operating an unlicensed dentistry practice out of an Orlando apartment. She was charged with a felony for putting hundreds of people at risk, police said.
Christine Souza, 47, was using things like a regular living room recliner as a dental chair in a Cypress Springs apartment in Orlando. She owned up to doing procedures like root canals, X-rays, and crowns in the apartment.
The last person Souza treated was an undercover cop. After that, police emptied the apartment owned by Souza'a dental hygienist. They confiscated equipment like an X-ray machine, generators, and drills. They also found Brazilian medications like chloroform and amoxicillin.
Souza was a dentist for 17 years in Brazil, police said. But she never got her license after she moved to the US. She could face up to five years in prison if convicted. The dental hygienist may also face charges.
