Buffalo police has reportedly arrested a huge, 48-year-old pickpocketing woman known as the "Hugging Bandit" who would hug many drunk men in New York and steal away their wallets thereafter. Myra Castleberry is currently being held without bail for targeting dozens of unsuspecting men outside bars over the years.
According to AP reports, Castleberry would distract men in the wee hours of the morning by caressing them and then stealing their wallets unknowingly. She would use the victims' credit cards within hours of the thefts.
The "Hugging Bandit" had earlier been arrested 17 times between 1998 and 2005 and has two felony convictions. She was suspected in the thefts but no victim was able to identify her as they were not conscious.
However, in February a Tonawanda man called police after reading a newspaper account and said he had lost $238 to the same woman in August 2005. Police later provided him with pictures and he picked her out immediately.
Castleberry is apprehended now on a felony warrant charging grand larceny and is scheduled to appear Friday in Buffalo City Court.
