Doctors are trying to save the life of an 11-month-old baby shot in the head by a bullet that fell from the sky Monday night. Police believe the bullet was fired into the air as part of a July 4th celebration.

Baby Alyssa is currently being treated at UNM Hospital in critical condition, where she underwent surgery to help repair the gunshot wound in her head and shoulder. She remains in pediatric intensive care.

On Monday night, Alyssa's family was at their grandmother's house, wrapping up their July 4th party. Alyssa's grandmother was carrying the baby, when she suddenly began crying. When her grandmother looked down, she noticed blood dripping from Alyssa's head.

"The bullet entered in rear quadrant of the baby's head and exited out and embedded into shoulder," says John Walsh of the Albuquerque Police Department.

Police say forensics tests using the recovered bullet should help determine more on the weapon used, but police cite it may be tough to find the culprit, as the bullet could have traveled anywhere between a few hundred yards up to a mile, depending on caliber and gunpowder.
