A State Representative, R-Texas is battling with a Connecticut restaurant owner who claims the birthplace of the burger.
Betty Brown, R-Texas, proposed a resolution naming Athens, Texas the birthplace of the hamburger. She said a resident of the town owned a luncheonette in the 1880s, which sold the first hamburger.
After catching wind of these claims, a third-generation restaurant owner in New Haven, Conn. argues that his grandfather invented the first burger in the 1890s.
Ken Lassen Sr., 89, who owns Louis' Lunch, established in 1895, said his grandfather was working one day when a man came in asking for something he can eat on the run. Lassen said his grandfather took a beef patty and placed it between two slices of bread, creating the hamburger.
New haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr., said, "We are even the birthplace of George Bush who wants people to think he's from Texas. So yes, the hamburger is as much a New Haven original as President Bush. Get over it, Texas."
