After being named the hot dog king, 23-year-old Joey Chestnut proved Sunday that he is also hungry for hamburgers.
Chestnut gobbled down 103 small hamburgers in just eight minutes, going home not only with a full stomach but also $10,000 richer. More importantly, he set a new world record.
The 11 other competitors were no match for Chestnut, who hails from San Jose, California, who easily surpassed the previous record of 97 Krystal burgers held by Japanese competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi.
Chestnut chomped his way to victory but downing over 100 Krystal burgers' 2 1/2- inch square patties, leaving organizers, spectators and television viewers in awe. His feat was televised on ESPN.
"We never thought we'd see someone anywhere near, let alone past, the century mark when we started the Krystal Square Off in 2004," said Brad Wahl, vice president of marketing for The Krystal Co.
Chestnut also brought home the bacon in Nathan's Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest in New York where he also beat Kobayashi, who came out of a chiropractic treatment prior to the contest.
Chestnut would have won twice in a row but his staunch Japanese rival did not participate this year due to lingering jaw pain for a tooth extraction in June. Kobayashi was the runaway winner in three previous Krystal Square Off.
