A 50-year-old Canadian man has set out on the first of its kind balloon journey Tuesday, where he will fly an undersized hot-air balloon across the Atlantic Ocean from Canada to England.
David Hempleman-Adams, who lives in Box, Wiltshire, set off on the adventurous journey in a helium balloon at 1 am from St John's in Newfoundland, Canada.
According to The Daily Telegraph, Hempleman-Adams hopes to complete the Toshiba Transatlantic Challenge in four days. Though he has no way to steer his balloon, the elderly man plans to finish the undertaken journey in southern England or northern France.
The balloon, which is the smallest of its kind ever used in such a challenge, comes equipped with a six-foot wicker basket. If the man succeeds, he will set a world record for the longest distance flight in a helium balloon.
This is not the first time Hempleman-Adams has undertaken such an adventurous journey. In addition to holding a number of other ballooning records, he also holds the record to become the first person to reach the geographic and magnetic North and South Poles. He also holds record to climb the highest peaks in all seven continents.
