A new regulation limiting alcohol orders and drinking in bars in the province took effect Friday.

The new rules of the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission set the minimum prices per ounce of spirits and liqueurs and per can of beer at $2.75. The price of an ounce of wine will be at least 35 cents and an ounce of draft beer at least 16 cents.

The new regulation also set the end of happy hours at 8 p.m. and limit the number of drinks a patron can drink or possess after 1 a.m. to two standard servings per order or two ounces of highball or two bottles or cans of beer.

The new prices aim to discourage bar patrons from binge drinking, which local authorities claimed was getting out of control.
