Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis announced a new system to help keep city police officers in shape and physically fit, saying the old requirements are not working.

Weis, who said the current cash-incentive system is not working, announced a new plan which would focus on more "holistic" or "integral" approach to physical fitness, including healthier eating habits and sustainable workout programs.

The city's chief police office also said he would like to create a program similar to what the Illinois State Police Department has done, which offers a mixture of incentives and requirements to help get police officers in good physical shape.

Currently, the CPD's system allows officers who pass a yearly physical to earn $250. Out of the 3,800 who signed up, of the city's roughly 13,000 cops, about 2,400 passed and about 100 failed. The rest never showed up.

Weis said he would talk with the police union to try to come to some compromise, but insisted that a healthy lifestyle is important in being an effective officer of the law.

"We need to develop a mind-set that taking care of yourself, being fit, being nutritionally sound, being as healthy as you can be is what you need to be a police officer," said Weis.
