After hiding himself up in a cave constructed at the back of his house for eight long years, a Chinese man wanted by police on gun charges has finally surrendered.

The official Xinhua news agency reports on Thursday that the man, who is 35-year-old comes from the southeastern city of Fuzhou. He had reportedly tunneled the cave out of a hill behind the bedroom of his house and put a wardrobe in front of the entrance to disguise it.

The man, identified as Liu Yong, left the cave during the day to read, wash and watch television in the house, but returned to the cave at night, the report said.

He told his wife he was hiding from debt collectors. Xinhua said Liu was accused of attacking people with guns, but no further details were given.

Liu gave himself up to police on Tuesday after no longer being able to cope with the "psychological pressure," the news agency said adding that some of his accomplices had already been sentenced to death.
