A businessman who sold condoms in a shop in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang was shut down by government officials for selling the latex products without instructions and with images deemed offensive, including the image of former Communist leader Chairman Mao Zedong, a state newspaper said Tuesday.
Having received numerous complaints about shop owner Zhang Zhiwen's condoms, which bear the likeness of several People's heroes, the industry and commerce administration raided the business and ordered the man to close down.
One of the key reasons for the forced closure was that most of the condoms did not come with instructions in Chinese, a government enforced requirement.
According to the Shanghai Daily, Zhang's decorative condom wrappers, which government officials called "inappropriate packages," bore the images of Mao Zedong, WWII Communist war hero Lei Feng, and government emblems.
Zhang said, "The condoms sold in the shop were no longer just products, they were art."
"They were unimaginably hot sellers," he said.
In an online blog entry posted after he was forced to close shop, Zhang added, "I have no idea what I should do now. I've already been in the condom business for more than two years."
Zhang noted that he might return to school. He had previously dropped out of schools after his second year in the Ad and Design department of a Zhejiang college.
