In an effort to highlight the ease in which drugs are available on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside streets, radio station DJs played a prank, sending someone out to buy find and buy heroin, all while wearing a beaver costume--and it didn't take the DJ long to find it. On June 4, CFOX-FM sent a DJ that goes by the on-air name, Captain Scotty, to a street that is notorious for drug deals. Dressed as a beaver and carrying a sign that said he was looking to buy heroin, the DJ was reportedly able to purchase the drugs in a matter of minutes.

Richie Randazzo, the New York City doorman who won $5 million in the state lottery, was fired by his employer despite his insistence that he wanted to keep his job. Randazzo's employer, Brown Harris Stevens, which manages an exclusive Park Avenue apartment building in New York, showed him the door. The company did not provide details in the firing.

In a first of its kind move, the Los Angeles city council on Tuesday approved a one-year ban on new fast-food outlets in a low-income neighborhood with a high incidence of obesity and diabetes. The moratorium aims to attract restaurants in the 32-square mile area of South Los Angeles to offer healthier food choices. The ban covers the 500,000 people living in the area, residents of which are mainly Latinos and African-Americans.

Faulty circuitry prevented the explosion of 18 planted bombs found on Tuesday in different areas of the port city of Surat in western India's Gujarat state. Forensic experts who examined the bombs found technically flawed integrated circuits in the bomb devices. It was the first time that a semiconductor was used in bombs, the experts said, according to the Times of India.

Eugene city officials fed up with crime are mulling an ordinance that will keep convicts and would-be criminals out of the downtown area for up to one year. Under the proposal, which is awaiting the council's vote pending the conclusion of a public hearing, a person charged with a crime such as robbery or assault would be banned from downtown Eugene for 90 days. Convicted criminals will not be allowed downtown for one year.
