The United States Coast Guard recovered a boat stolen from a Florida Keys dock in October off the Yucatan Peninsula with 15 Cuban migrants on board and two men suspected of stealing the vessel.
The two suspects and the 2008 Hydrosport police say the men stole from a Plantation Key home, were returned to Florida on Friday, Nov. 7, according to a press release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
Police say the boat is valued at $200,000 and was stolen between Oct. 21 and 22.
The boat was reported stolen after workers installing a pool at the home noticed it was missing from davits behind the house, Deputy Becky Herrin, a sheriff's office spokeswoman said.
One of the suspects, 40-year-old Sergio Yero of Tavernier, Fla., was hired by the boat's owner to do plaster work on his home. He reportedly disappeared about the same time the boat was stolen, Herrin said.
Yero was on the boat when it was recovered by the Coast Guard, Herrin said.
A second suspect, 38-year-old Ricardo Espildora, was also found on the boat with Yero.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office arrested both men on grand theft charges.
Herrin said Det. Gustavo Helago received a call from a Coast Guard investigator on Nov. 4 saying the boat was recovered in Mexican waters. The boat will be returned to its owner, Herrin said.
