Partygoers to the Kent State University's annual College Fest started several street fires Saturday night after police tried to break the large crowd by firing rubber bullets and paintballs with nausea-inducing chemicals.
There were no reports of injury but the Kentnewsnet.com reported 125 arrests.
Witnesses said several hundred partygoers burned furniture, suitcases and tree branches in the middle of East College Avenue when police allegedly began firing rubber bullets at 8:40 p.m. to disperse them.
"The cops were being nice, and two minutes later we were shot by rubber bullets for no reason," Jamie Farrell, junior architecture major, told Kentnewsnet.com.
"Nothing would have started if the cops hadn't started walking down the street. It was a typical party. People would have gotten drunk and passed out," the website quoted Evan Middleton, Kent State graduate student in human resources, as saying.
As police dispersed the crowd, firefighters arrived and put out the street fire that reached 15 feet high at 9:20 p.m. But five other street fires were set.
More police were called in for backup. Emergency vehicles from various areas and law enforcement agencies also came to the scene.
