In an incident of what can be yet another U.S. Mint goof, a Colorado couple has found a dollar coin without the face of George Washington on it. Although, the coin does have "In God We Trust" inscribed on its edge, it is missing out on the images both on its front and backside.
"We're just so excited," Mary Smith told The Associated Press. "I'm just dumbfounded that we actually found something significant."
The error has come to light just a week after it was revealed that some new George Washington dollar coins were circulating without their edge inscriptions. The collectable coins were being sold over the internet for $50 each. The first coin was however sold for $600.
Ron Guth, a professional coin authenticator in Newport Beach, Calif., who has authenticated the Smiths' coin, says the find can fetch the couple thousands of dollars if they decide to sell it. However, the value will depend upon how many similar misprints are found, he told the Associated Press.
Since the Smiths' coin bears a "D," it mean it was produced at the Denver facility.
Of the three hundred million of the dollar coins in the new Presidential series, half of them were made in Philadelphia and the rest in Denver.
The "Godless" coins were all believed to have come from the Philadelphia Mint.
U.S. Mint is still to confirm the Smiths' find.
