What McGrath didn't know was that the contract stipulated he lose a scheduled day off and any overtime worked would be paid back in bourbon. McGrath said he was told he had to sign the paperwork or face the lose of his apprenticeship.
"I was not given the opportunity or the time to read it," he said.
Following intervention by the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union, mark was able to find another employer, but he now warns other workers that individual contracts can be tricky.
Building workers are planning to picket the Housing Industry Association today as part a week of action against workplace reforms.
