An Ohio mother was convicted Friday of killing her baby by burning it to death in a microwave oven. She now may face the death penalty.
China Arnold reportedly showed little emotion upon hearing the verdict, but put her head down and looked at the defense table.
The mother of four other children plead not guilty to the charges of killing her 28-day-old daughter in August 2005, with her defense team initially saying her 8-year-old child committed the heinous act.
However, it was established that while Arnold lived with her four children and her then-boyfriend, Terrell Talley, the father of Paris, the murdered infant, the children were not at home at the time of the crime.
It is reported that Arnold and Terrell had argued over the validity of whether Terrell had fathered baby Paris. According to Sky News, Arnold's cell mate testified that Arnold told her she had put the baby in the microwave because she was afraid Terrell would leave her if he found out the child was not his.
Arnold now faces the sentencing portion of the trial. The penalty for aggravated murder could be death, but according to Ohio law, a judge can only sentence a defendant to death if a jury recommends it.
However, even if the jury recommends death, the judge can dismiss the recommendation and give an alternative prison sentence.
