The resident of a small island off the coast of Scotland has declared its independence from the United Kingdom. Stuart Hill, the owner of the island, wants it to be a crown dependency, similar to the Channel Islands. According to a statement on his Web site, Hill, who owns Forvik, a 2. 5-acre island in the Shetland Islands, declared that he no longer recognized the authority of the British government or the European Union.

The Old North Church, Boston's 285-year-old beacon of the American Revolution, has gone high-tech with the installation of light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. Ed Pignone, executive director of the Old North Foundation of Boston, said energy-efficient lights now illuminate ceiling vaults inside the church, whose steeple was used by Paul Revere to display two lanterns as a signal about British troop movements on April 18, 1775- the night described in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famous poem, which included the line: "One if by land, and two if by sea. "

A housewife was convicted of attempted murder after she tried to kill her husband by mixing antifreeze into their wedding anniversary dinner. The court of Stafford Crown found Kate Knight, 28, guilty of attempted murder after she laced her husband's curry and red wine with antifreeze back in 2005. Lee's ingestion of the tainted food and drink caused him to suffer from brain damage, and irreversible kidney failure.

An archbishop held a Sunday worship service sans crown, after the item was stolen from his car Friday night. Bishop Metropolitan Isaiah of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America commented on his appearance without his crown, noting it to have been the first time since 1985 that he led a Sunday service without it.

The Londonderry Crown Court has sentenced a man to a two-year imprisonment for beating up his mother, hurting her in the face and body, in their residence. The court said Gerald McKinney, 25, had committed a cowardly and savage attack, BBC news reported.
