The poor in the Big Apple have one unlikely benefactor after someone sends a $7,000 check to give to the needy.
Marguerite Drucker, an 84-year-old housewife, sent a cashier's check to the city of New York writing, "Dear sir, Please find enclosed check for the poor of the City of New York. The city has been very good to me."
According to local station WINS, Drucker, a former nurse, was married to a pediatrician in Queens, where they raised seven children, participated in church activities and contributed to charities, friends said. She now lives in another state and didn't wish to discuss her gift.
New York City Comptroller, William Thompson Jr., is overjoyed with the donation, saying, "She stands as a wonderful symbol of New York and all that's good about this city and what it's done for so many people over the years. It's very, very rare to receive a basically anonymous donation of this size."
As for the money, according to CBS, Drucker's check will go into the city's general fund, which pays for a variety of services, including helping the poor.
