A recent ruling by several California grand juries has indicted 40 pilots for fraud.

Federal officials reveal the pilots falsified reports that would have disclosed they were collecting disability payments for medical and psychological conditions - disqualifying them from operating an aircraft. Other pilots failed to report prior criminal convictions.

Authorities found several pilots who continued to fly even though they had disabilities including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, drug and alcohol addiction, disabling back pain, and severe heart conditions.

The indictments are a result of an 18-month investigation into some 40,000 licensed pilots in California. Federal transportation officials, the Social Security Administration, and the U.S. Attorney's office contributed to the investigations.

The FAA has revoked 14 of the pilots' licenses and medical certificates, the other 26 pilots may be suspended.
