A beagle named Belle has become the first canine to be awarded with Vita Wireless Samaritan Award. Belle received the award for saving her owner's life by dialing 911 that alerted emergency services to timely reach his owner who had collapsed due to a diabetic seizure.
"There is no doubt in my mind that I'd be dead if I didn't have Belle," said Weaver, 34, whose blood sugar had dropped dangerously low.
The dog had been trained to detect potential diabetic attacks by licking and sniffing Weaver's nose to check his blood sugar levels and pawing him. It had also been skilled in calling for help in emergencies, says the AP.
The dog used her teeth to press the number nine key, which the phone was programmed to dial as a "911" call to emergency services.
The VITA Wireless Samaritan Award is given to someone who used a cell phone to save a life, prevent a crime or help in an emergency.
"Belle is more than just a life-saver. She's my best friend," Weaver said.
