A door falls off a Brazilian jet, and crashes next to a supermarket shortly after departure from Sao Paulo.
The TAM airplane was able to land safely, despite the gaping hole. None of the 79 passengers on the Fokker 100 plane were injured.
The jet was on its way to Rio de Janeiro when it returned to the Sao Paulo airport 18 minutes after takeoff.
TAM's Fokker 100 planes have been involved in a series of accidents over the past decade.
One of them crashed into an urban area shortly after takeoff from Sao Paulo in 1996, killing 100 people onboard and on the ground. It was considered one of Brazil's worst air disasters.
In 1997, an explosion onboard a TAM Fokker 100 killed a passenger by blowing him out of the plane.
In 2001, an engine breakup on the same type of plane resulted in two windows shattering. One passenger died from the depressurization.
TAM says it plans to eliminate all of the Fokker planes by 2010. The Dutch maker of the planes went bankrupt 10 years ago.
