As a result of complaints from commuters, Manila authorities have been telling bus and taxi drivers that they need to wash and deodorize every day.
Bayani Fernando, chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, says, "We understand that drivers must earn money to support themselves and their respective families. It is only right that in return, these drivers must observe proper hygiene."
Some of the approximately 30,000 public drivers in Manila often strip off some of their clothing to better tolerate the temperatures that regularly hit the high 30s Celsius from mid-March to mid-May.
Regardless of the unbearable heat, Fernando has reminded them to maintain decorum and to bathe regularly.
