Riverside County sheriff's investigators searching a home for drugs, made a dual discovery on Saturday. Not only did they find the reported methamphetamine, but the search led them to a strange looking, sloth-like mammal called a coatimundi.
The hog-nosed animal is similar in appearance to raccoons but is characterized by its long snout and bear-like paws. The nocturnal animal is native to forests of Central and South America.
According to Fish and game official Kyle Chang, the animal's owner, Norman James Vollan, 29, had kept coatimundi as a pet without a license, which is illegal in California.
Chang revealed to AP that Vollan had brought the animal for $1,000 three years ago when he used to work in Nevada. The animal was transported from Texas but the identity of the seller was not clear.
Chang said the animal will go to a zoo or an individual with an exotic animal license. For the time being however, the nocturnal animal will stay at an undisclosed animal sanctuary.
Vollan however, was arrested for possessing methamphetamines and child pornography.
